There’s no worse feeling than heading to work and realizing that your breath smells less than ideal. We’ve all been there. Even with regular brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash, sometimes the bad breath insists on showing up at the worst of times.
While a piece of gum might help throughout the day, we’ve found the best thing to do to reduce bad breath is by attacking the issue at its source: your tongue.
Your tongue continues a ton of bacteria that is often responsible for bad breath. We are often good about making sure we brush our teeth and floss, but we often forget to give our tongue the proper care it deserves. One way to reduce your bad breath is by investing in a high-quality tongue scraper and scraping your tongue every morning when you wake up.
Surprisingly simple, tongue scraping will help you remove some of that nasty bacteria that causes bad breath and will help promote an overall healthy mouth. You can pick up a tongue scraper at your local supermarket or pharmacy and at most it will run you five to ten dollars – quite a great investment if you ask us!
While not a substitute for brushing your teeth and flossing, many of our patients have found that after a few days of tongue scraping their bad breath mysteriously disappears. While we recommend you pick up a tongue scraper, many toothbrushes now come with a ‘rigid’ toothbrush head that can also be used to scrape your tongue and reduce that foul-smelling bacteria.
If you haven’t gotten into the habit of scraping your tongue regularly, just like flossing it might take a while to get into the habit. We recommend that you set your tongue scraper by your toothbrush in a visible place in your bathroom, so you don’t forget.
If you’ve struggled with bad breath, investing in a tongue scraper just might the solution you need! Give it a try, and let us know your experience in the comments!
